Red's Stingy Offense Drives a 17-13 Victory

In preparation for Japan's Dream Cup, Sockeye hosted an intrasquad scrimmage this past Saturday, March 1st, at Ingraham stadium. Approximately 200 fans were in attendance to watch this exciting event.

The two teams were an even split squad of past, present and future Sockeye players. Red received to start the game. Working patiently, Red was able to work the under cuts until former Sockeye standout Steve Finn threw a 20 yard shot for the first goal of the game. After a Red D by Nate Castine on a forehand huck, Red was in position for the first break. However, an unfortunate drop near their end zone gave Black the easy score. 1-1. The next few points continued in this fashion with both teams having an erratic offense but playing solid defense. It wasn't until 4-3 when Red was able to combine solid man defense with consistent offense to take a 7-3 lead. After another Black turnover Red was yards away from scoring until Andrew Fleming had a huge poach D. Black scored soon after and gained the momentum they needed to pull within two before Red answered to take half, 8-5.

The halftime entertainment featured a longest throw competition with middle school kids in attendance and a raffle. Patagonia graciously donated two rain jackets and a bag for this event. Cliff Bar also provided around 400 mini-Cliff Bars which were given away as people entered. A huge thanks goes to Patagonia and Cliff Bar for their support.

At the start of the second half both teams seemed to find their offensive flow. Points kept on being traded until Red was able to expand their lead with a couple of breaks. With Red on the cusp of victory, the decision was made to lengthen the game from 15 to 17, giving Black an added glimmer of hope. Black would answer the call, but it was too little too late as Red team closed out the victory, 17-13.

It was evident that players were amped to play again after a long winter. The defense definitely dominated the first half as most players "remembered" how to play at their highest speed. The level of play increased dramatically in the second half, resulting in some hard-fought defensive blocks but far fewer unforced errors. All in all, mission accomplished. Sockeye was able to shed its winter rust, relieve some pent-up aggression, and do this all of this without any injuries. Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who came out to enjoy the game!
